The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on the end of last week. The freezers were concealed behind a plasterboard wall in the dwelling, situated in the city of Innsbruck. Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the female victim, stated to law enforcement last week that there had been an incident—but rejected intentional killing. Speaking to reporters recently, a official for the legal authorities announced the brothers were being detained on "high likelihood of intentional killing". The identities of those implicated have not been released by law enforcement, in following local legislation. Their going missing was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who resides in Germany, on 25 July 2024. Authorities said the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey. Her bank card was then noted as being active overseas repeatedly. But when investigators searched the mother's apartment, her mobile phone was found. Someone also stated listening to a loud noise in the flat, and screams of "mother" on the day the mother and child were believed to have vanished. A broader official inquiry was launched, with officers finding various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—such as a resignation letter to her company and messages to the 55-year-old suspect. Law enforcement said a four-figure sum was also transferred to the individual. Katja Tersch stated to reporters on that day that a storage unit had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been positioned inside. The male siblings removed the appliance from the unit on the day the victims went missing, Tersch said. And a shortly afterward, they purchased an additional appliance. Officials believe they consider this suggests the deaths were premeditated. "How they died was not identifiable due to the state of decomposition of the victims," she commented. A legal representative—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and went unnoticed during a prior examination. Although the suspects were arrested in June, it was only on 12 November that the 55-year-old acknowledged an event and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, officials confirmed. At the same time, his 53-year-old sibling acknowledged a cover-up but denied awareness of a murder. The pair are presently in pre-trial detention in jails in separate locations, around 117 miles (189km) apart. In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative said the "alleged double murder... represents the sudden and brutal end of two individuals and uncovers a brutal scheme". "Females of all ages are being killed due to the mere fact that they are of the female gender," they continued. "Gender-based killings are a deeply rooted and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
