The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
