We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
