Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters went into the house near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled after the incident was found shortly later. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had happened on a level above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
