Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to arrange lodging when I arrived, yet when I arrived, a major event was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. With no idea how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering near a gaming venue, believing I might spend the night in an establishment that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing an interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more folks who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost because a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one of the sandwiches she had from her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest for the evening.

With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a guy she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up study at that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her good deed abundantly. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
